Heart Health & Ayurveda – the No.1 Killer

In Ayurveda, ischemic heart disease (IHD) is called as Hridroga. There are 5 clinical descriptions of IHD according to Ayurveda based on vitiated doshas and additional causes.

  • If the pain is acute and has a shifting nature, it is called as vata heart disease.
  • If it is linked with a burning sensation, it is called pitta heart disease.
  • If the pain is mild and is linked with heaviness, nausea, and cough, it is called kapha heart illness.
  • If all the representative symptoms are present, then it is known as tridosha heart disease.
  • In Ayurveda, kapha (hardening of arteries) is the foremost underlying mechanism of heart diseases.

To understand, how to upkeep the healthy heart, we need to understand two most common heart problems separately and their management;

  • Hypertension Management
  • Lipid Management

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is typically a hybrid of physiological, emotional and mental factors. Physiologically, hypertension is often aggravated by atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis, obesity and drug abuse (including cigarettes, alcohol and caffeine). Emotionally and mentally, hypertension normally occurs in persons with stressful lifestyles, characterized by worry, hurry and flurry.

What does Ayurveda say about Hypertension?

Hypertension (Rakta Vata) or high blood pressure is a disorder characterized by more than normal pressure at which the blood is being pumped by the heart. The following varied reasons can be the secondary causes hypertension

  • Toxins accumulating in tissues and blocking circulation.
  • Poor nutrition.
  • Poor digestion.
  • Imbalance of the nervous system.
  • Accumulation of physical and mental stress.
  • Lowering of natural resistance and immunity.

What is Ayurveda’s approach to Hypertension?

Since hypertension can be influenced by many factors like diet, digestion, toxin accumulation, stress, exercise levels and daily routine the Ayurvedic approach to the condition is a comprehensive one that balances many physiological functions simultaneously.
Diet should be low in fat, hydrogenated oils and saturated fats must be avoided at all costs. Butter and ghee prepared from cow’s milk is allowed. Vegetables like bitter gourd and other varieties of gourd and drumsticks should be allowed. The best diet for a patient suffering from hypertension is, of course, boiled vegetables and fruits. A paste made of about 1 gm of garlic, mixed with a glass of buttermilk, taken twice a day, will help bring the blood pressure to normal.
Sleeping early and keeping regular habits helps. Violent exercise should be avoided. A slow walk in the morning is the best exercise for such a patient. Anti stress measures such as Yoga, meditation should be taken to bring down the stress levels.

Lipid Management

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, white substance that is classified as a fat, and is essential to life. It is essential for building cell membranes, hormones and bile acids. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is “bad” because it carries cholesterol into the bloodstream. It may also accumulate on the arterial walls, dangerously constricting the flow of blood leading to clogged arteries and heart disease. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is “good” because it carries cholesterol out of the bloodstream.

What does Ayurveda say about high cholesterol?

According to ayurveda, ama, or toxins in the fat tissue, generates the harmful kind of cholesterol. Ayurveda says that Amavisha is created when ama is present for a very long time and is not flushed from the system. Amavisha is a more reactive, dangerous type of ama. When ama starts to spread throughout the body, it can mix with the dhatus (body tissues) and the malas (waste products). Once amavisha mixes with the fat tissue, it damages the channels of the body and leads to problems such as high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure.

What is Ayurveda’s approach to address high cholesterol?

Ayurveda addresses high cholesterol through a change in lifestyle, diet and intake of herbs, which can affect healthy functioning of the liver. This in turn successfully allows proper metabolism of food and builds plasma, blood, muscle and fat tissue.
